Although the Black Panther party dissolved in 1982, a new group called the New Black Panther Party was founded in Dallas, Texas in 1989 by Aaron Michaels. The NBPP strives to uphold the legacy of the original Black Panther Party. Nevertheless, original members have viewed the NBPP as illegitimate, declaring, "There is no new Black Panther Party."
Black women in the Black Panther Movement have had influence in many spheres of society. The way Black women wore their hair during that time period influenced the natural hair movement from the 1970's to what we see occurring with Black women today. Many of the women involved (who have not been arrested) continue to work in grassroots organizations, prison reform groups, and lecture around the country. |
